How to fix Xbox controller drift
Work down the list from the free fixes. Most mild drift on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One controllers clears up with an update, a power-cycle, a clean or a dead zone.
Not sure it's drift? The Xbox controller test takes 11 seconds and tells you how bad it is. Opening a controller can void its warranty, so check that first.
Measure it first
Run the stick drift test and note how far each stick wanders at rest. Under 3% is normal. Retest after each step so you know what worked.
Update the controller
Open the Xbox Accessories app, on your console or from the Microsoft Store on a Windows PC, select the controller and install any update it offers. On a PC, connect the controller with a USB cable for the update.
Power-cycle it
Hold the Xbox button for about ten seconds until the controller turns off. Take the batteries out for a minute if it uses them, put them back, and turn it on again. Then test over a cable as well as wireless.
Clean around the stick
With the controller off, push the stick to one side and blow short bursts of compressed air into the gap around its base, rotating the stick between bursts. Repeat from each side.
If drift remains, run a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (90% or stronger) around the gap while rotating the stick, then let it dry for a few minutes. Never pour liquid in.
Set a dead zone in your game
Raise the stick dead zone in your game's controller settings to the value the drift test suggests. Xbox Elite controllers can also adjust stick response in the Xbox Accessories app.
Check your warranty
Check whether the controller is still covered on Microsoft's device support site; the length of cover depends on the product and where you bought it. If it is covered, request a repair or replacement before opening the controller.
Replace the stick, or the controller
Xbox controller sticks are soldered to the board, so a replacement needs desoldering, or a repair shop. Hall effect replacement sticks, which read position with magnets, resist the wear that causes drift. Buying new, look for controllers with Hall effect sticks.
Questions
Why does my Xbox controller drift?
The sticks use sensors with a contact track that wears with use, and dirt can get under the stick cap. Both make the stick report movement when you aren't touching it.
Can I calibrate an Xbox controller?
Xbox consoles have no stick calibration. Updating, cleaning and a dead zone are the practical fixes; worn sticks need replacing.
Does drift void the warranty?
No. Drift is a fault, so a controller in warranty can usually be repaired or replaced. Opening it yourself is what can void the warranty.
